K&J Trucking By the Numbers [Infographic] June 14 2018

Post by: K&J Trucking

In the trucking industry we deal with a lot of numbers, after all, we are one of the most highly regulated industries, for better or worse. But because we deal with so many numbers everyday we sometimes forget to stop and take notice of what our numbers mean for our drivers, customers, and friends in the industry.

There is so much to celebrate at K&J Trucking! Our wonderful drivers, dispatch, mechanics, and staff have worked hard to make these statistics possible; check out the numbers below!

Is It Possible to Experience Financial Peace On The Road? May 15 2018

Post by: K&J Trucking

Unless you avoid talk-radio like the plague you've probably heard Dave Ramsey while you've been out on the road. If you have, then you likely know about the cash-based envelope system and his educational series Financial Peace University. While both are amazing resources that we highly recommend, you don't have to go full-on-Dave-Ramsey in order to see the benefits of budgeting. Learning the basics of budgeting is a great way to dip your toe into financial planning for your trucking business, and your life. Here are a few tips for a balanced approach to being a financially responsible driver or owner operator.

Why Your Company Doesn't Want to Pay You Per Diem May 13 2018

Post by: K&J Trucking

"Per Diem", as it relates to how trucking companies pay their drivers, is a portion of their salary paid to the driver un-taxed, technically as a meal and expense reimbursement.

Company drivers used to be able to deduct their per diem. As of the beginning of 2018 that has gone away. Some drivers want their company to continue to pay them a per diem, and some companies are doing so, but not all. Why do some companies hesitate to offer you a per diem?

How South Dakota Trucking Companies are Fighting for Your Rights in D.C. April 17 2018

Post by: K&J Trucking

In the spirit of truckers heading to Washington, we wanted to share about our own fearless leader Shelley's trip to D.C. this past fall. Shelley, along with representatives from other small South Dakota truck lines, went to Washington D.C. to meet with the federal Department of Transportation. Senator Rounds arranged the meeting and attended part of the meeting until his duties called him away. Staffers from his office and the offices of Thune and Noem were also in attendance. During their meeting, South Dakota trucking companies had the chance to make their voices heard—especially when it came to issues surrounding the ELD Mandate. Continue reading to hear what they talked about and what you can do to move forward!

Have You Heard About the Proposed Changes to Hours of Service? - The REST Act April 10 2018

Post by: K&J Trucking

We've known that the 14 hour rule was problematic since it was first introduced, but it isn't until the last few months that we've really felt the full impact of the legislation. Since the ELD Mandate went into effect in December of 2017 we have heard that drivers are more tired than they've ever been. This exhaustion comes because the inflexibility of the 14 hour rule. But change is in the air.

How to Figure Out if Trucking is Right For You April 3 2018

Post by: K&J Trucking

It is interesting for us to meet new drivers and hear about their career path. We have drivers who are fresh out of CDL school and always knew they wanted to be on the road because their family was in trucking. We have drivers who are in their second or even third careers! Some of our drivers are former military servicemen; some are former pastors; but all of them have a story. They all had to go through the process of discovering if trucking was the right path for them.
