Human trafficking is a devastating crime that impacts millions of people worldwide. As part of the fight against this heinous act, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has launched the 2025 Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative (HTAI). This program is designed to educate, empower, and mobilize the trucking industry to identify and report signs of human trafficking.

Here’s everything you need to know about this critical initiative and how you can make a difference.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking is a crime involving the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of exploitation. This exploitation can take many forms, including forced labor, sexual exploitation, organ trafficking, child soldiering, and domestic servitude.

Traffickers often target vulnerable individuals, such as those in poverty, those lacking social support, or those displaced by conflict or natural disasters. Victims may be deceived by false promises of employment, education, or a better life, only to find themselves trapped and unable to escape due to threats, violence, or debt bondage.

Human trafficking is a global issue and is considered a severe violation of human rights. It requires coordinated efforts from governments, organizations, and communities to prevent, identify, and combat.

What Is the CVSA Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative?

The CVSA’s HTAI is an annual campaign focused on raising awareness about human trafficking among commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers, inspectors, and other industry professionals. The 2025 initiative will span the week of January 22-26, with specific events and activities aimed at education and outreach.

This initiative aligns with National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and proactive reporting in combating trafficking.

Why Is the Trucking Industry Involved?

The U.S. Department of Transportation Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking issued a report citing the substantial role transportation industries (as well as  law enforcement and government agencies) can play to combat human trafficking.

Due to their frequent presence at truck stops, rest areas, and highways—common venues for trafficking operations—truck drivers and other CMV operators are uniquely positioned to identify and report suspicious activity. By equipping drivers with the knowledge and tools to recognize the signs, the CVSA aims to turn the trucking industry into a powerful force against trafficking.

Truckers Against Trafficking: making a difference

One key partner in the fight against human trafficking is Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), a non-profit organization that empowers the trucking, bus, and energy industries to combat trafficking. TAT provides free training programs, including videos and certification courses, to help drivers recognize and report suspicious activity. Their resources have transformed the trucking industry into a critical line of defense, saving countless lives and disrupting trafficking networks.

Thousands of trucking professionals have undergone TAT training, equipping them to act as vigilant allies in the fight against trafficking, particularly in areas like truck stops and highways where trafficking often occurs. Through their efforts, truck drivers have made calls leading to the identification of over 1,200 victims of trafficking.

Together with initiatives like CVSA’s HTAI, organizations like TAT are making a significant impact in the fight against human trafficking.

What Happens During HTAI Week?

During the initiative, the CVSA and its partners will:

  1. Distribute Educational Materials: Pamphlets, posters, and digital content will be shared to inform drivers and inspectors about the red flags of trafficking.
  2. Conduct Training Sessions: Online and in-person training programs will teach industry professionals how to spot and respond to potential trafficking scenarios.
  3. Collaborate with Law Enforcement: Officers and inspectors will work with trucking companies and organizations to promote awareness and distribute resources.
  4. Encourage Reporting: The initiative emphasizes the importance of using the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888) or local authorities to report suspicious activity.

Signs of Human Trafficking

Every report of suspicious activity has the potential to save lives. By being alert and informed, truckers can play a pivotal role in disrupting trafficking networks and helping victims find safety and support. Here are some potential red flags to watch for:

  • Individuals who appear frightened, disoriented, or unable to speak freely.
  • Lack of personal belongings or identification.
  • A vehicle frequently dropping off and picking up people at odd hours.
  • Individuals being closely monitored or controlled by someone else.
  • Signs of physical abuse or malnourishment.

How You Can Get Involved

  1. Participate in Training: Take advantage of free training programs offered during HTAI week to understand the nuances of human trafficking and how to respond.
  2. Share Information: Spread the word among your colleagues and industry contacts about the CVSA’s initiative.
  3. Stay Vigilant: Keep an eye out for suspicious activity and don’t hesitate to report your concerns.
  4. Support Organizations: Collaborate with groups like Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) to access additional resources and join the fight.
