For years, Rick Meyer worked in the oil field industry in Beaver, Oklahoma as a Pump Operator for Sheridan Production Services. But when the oil industry took a hit, Meyer was laid off his job. With a unique set of skills and no work, he was left frustrated and with weeks of unemployment.
That's where the Oklahoma Employment Security Commision stepped in. Through the OESC, Meyer was referred to Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) career planner, Theresa Carillo in Guymon, Oklahoma. In the process of working with Meyer, Theresa learned that he was interested in a career in commercial trucking.
With a high demand for CDL truck drivers, Meyer decided it was a good time to further his education through driver training at Central Tech in Drumright, Oklahoma. In June of 2016 Meyer successfully graduated from the training program with his Class A CDL and began working for K&J Trucking. K&J has a field office in Guymon, Oklahoma which is how Meyer connected with a SD trucking company.
Meyer was happy to report that he enjoys his work and loves that his career gives him a chance to travel. As Meyer put it, "I get paid to see the country!" Trucking is truly more than just a job!
We caught up with Rick Meyer again in 2019 to dig a little deeper into his story. If you like to read how the owner of a gas station in Oklahoma found his way to a South Dakota Trucking company, then this story is for you! We are so proud to continue working with Rick and look forward to a bright future!
